Distributed Media and Meme Warfare

Hey guys, welcome to my blog about distributed media and meme warfare.

There are three different types of media networks (centralized, decentralized and distributed) and today I will discuss distributed media. Distributed media is when there is no centre source, meaning that the network can both scale up easily and maintain low coordination costs. Axel Bruns (2007) states that “artefacts generated are no longer products in a traditional sense: they are always unfinished and continually under development – such development is evolutionary, iterative and palimpsestic.” This statement helps me to understand how it is different from the other media networks and influenced me to create a diagram showing the difference.

As for meme warfare, it is a modern type of information warfare and psychological warfare involving the propagation of memes on social media through Platform Weaponization. Memes influence, affect, generate and alter ideas making them useful in swaying people’s opinions and changing perceptions of reality. E.g. the USA presidential election in 2006. This is where 4chan and the Donald sub-reddit is widely credited with assisting Donald Trump in winning the election in an event they call ‘The Great Meme War’.

  1. Hi Caitlyn!

I really love how you took the concepts of different types of networks and made your own diagram to better understand it, this definitely helped me understand these ideas further! I think your example of meme warfare is also really good and relevant, perhaps you could include a visual representation of these ideas as well or incorporate your own thoughts on the topic, it would be interesting to see your own viewpoint!

  2. This is a really well-written blog post, we both focused on similar ideas of the distributed media models how they are used. The examples of meme warfare really helped me understand your perspective and the lecture content. Really well done and your point of view was refreshing to read.
